Robert Eugene Entsminger

Robert Eugene Entsminger, 74, of Millboro, Virginia died Friday, July 10, 2015 at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem.

He was born December 18, 1940 in Lexington, the son of the late Janie Mae Entsminger Underwood.

Robert is survived by his brother; Larry Entsminger of Millboro; uncle Robert Milton Entsminger; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Myers.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2015 at Millboro Funeral Home with Pastor Lloyd Via officiating. Interment will be in Millboro Christian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kenney Bryant, Sam Fish, Brandon Entsminger, Jeff Simmons, Bo Simmons, and Donald Kennedy.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA or Millboro Area Rescue Squad.

Mary Emma Peters McLaughlin

MaryMary Emma Peters McLaughlin, 84, of Millboro, Virginia died Thursday, June 11, 2015 at her granddaughter’s home in Highland County.

She was born February 15, 1931 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Carl Peters and Mary Buble Peters.

Mary was employed as the Superior Court Secretary for the state of New Jersey.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.  There are not enough words to express what she meant to everyone.  Mary enjoyed life and cared for others like they were her own.  She was a Fifth Initiate of Eckanar. We were all blessed to have her in our lives.

Mary is survived by her children: Marie Monica Gebert and husband Gary of Sterling, CT, Lotti Jean Clark and husband Larry Shaw of Ocean, NJ; son-in-law: Lester Lewis Smeijan of Barnegat, NJ; grandchildren: Thea Lonnette Marshall and husband Barry of Williamsville, Steven R. Clark of Wisconsin, Stacie Marie Clark-Violanzis and husband Robert of Barnegat, NJ; great grandchildren: Emma Jean Marshall and Leonidas Violanzis; brother; Carl Peters and wife Jo Anne of Westwood, NJ; several nieces and nephews; special friend Carroll “Pat” Davenport and lifetime friend Fran Reiman.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene Wayne McLaughlin.

Frank Richard Patanio

PatanioFrank Richard Patanio, 66, of Millboro, Virginia died Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Bath Community Hospital.

He was born June 29, 1948 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Frank Patanio and Marie Daidone Patanio.

Frank was retired from Warwick Telephone Company, and ran his own bakery route for Entenmann’s Bread.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves.

Frank enjoyed hunting and fishing; an outdoor enthusiast who loved his home and his dog “Calvin”.

He is survived by his 2 children, Danielle Lanza & husband Robert of Massapequa Park, NY, Vincent Patanio & wife Tara Rizzolo of Morganville, NJ; grandchildren, Victoria & Amanda Lanza; and brother, Joseph Patanio & wife Karen of Weyers Cave, Virginia.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday April 22, 2015 at Millboro Funeral Home with Pastor Lloyd Via officiating.

Joyce Wade Shifflett

Joyce Rose Wade Shifflett, 77, wife of Henry Donald Shifflett, Sr. of Millboro Springs, Virginia passed from this life to her eternal home on January 24, 2015 at Augusta Nursing and Rehab, Fishersville, VA.

She was a retired bus driver for Bath County School System.

She was born October 19, 1937 in Millboro Springs, Virginia, the daughter of the late Stanley Richardson Sr. and Clara Margaret (McKee) Wade.

She attended Millboro High School, graduating in 1956.
Henry and Joyce were also married in 1956.

She was a lifelong active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Millboro Springs, VA. She played the piano and organ for many years. She was one of the few that could play the old Putman pump organ.

She was a past member of the Order of The Eastern Star, and had served as Worthy Matron.

She enjoyed keeping her grandchildren in the summertime, and kept her granddaughter Heather so she could complete her school year at Millboro.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her children, Henry “Skip” Jr. of Augusta Springs, Cherel Blazer of Great Mills, MD, and Norman of Leonardstown, MD; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother Stanley R. Jr. and wife Charlotte of Luray; sister in law Betty Wade of Fishersville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Billy Wade, and her granddaughter Heather Marie Shifflett.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church with Stanley Wade Jr. and Pastor Darren Keithley officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2015 at Millboro Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Millboro Area Rescue Squad.

Laura Catherine Lyons

Laura LyonsLaura Catherine Brown Lyons, 75, of Millboro, Virginia died Tuesday, December 02, 2014 at her home.

She was born May 31, 1939 in Marion County, SC, the daughter of the late Neal Brown Sr. and Zilpha Johnson Brown.

Laura was the owner of Green Valley Farm Hunter’s Paradise, former owner of Arrows & Antlers Restaurant, and an employee at E.E. Lyons.

She was a member of Woodland Union Church, Business & Professional Women, a life member of the National Turkey Federation, the NRA, and the Ruffled Grouse Society. She loved to bowl with the USBC, was Team Mom for baseball and football, she was the only woman in Virginia to be a Special Game Warden, and was active in the Relay For Life as a cancer survivor.

Laura is survived by her 6 children: James Lyons, Lance Lyons, Dorothy Phillips, Frances Aylor, Kimberly Lyons, Daniel Lyons; 9 grandchildren: Cathy Repass, Luke Lyons, Grace Lyons, Victoria Wilkens, Carl Foreaker, James Lyons, Dylan Lyons, Marvin Aylor, and Corey Phillips; numerous great grandchildren; brothers; Bobby Brown and wife Margaret, Dean Brown and wife Catherine; other; her special K9 companion, Little Girl; her special friends Teresa Ingram and Betsy Lockridge, and her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, her son Woody Lyons, her daughter Helen Repass, her granddaughter Heather Foreaker, and her sister Inez Gasque.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday December 4, 2014 at Woodland Union Church with Pastor Scott Reese officiating. Interment will be in Andrew Chapel Cemetery, Vienna, VA on Friday December 5, at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Care Hospice and Relay For Life.

Earl Blaine Haddix

Earl Blaine Haddix, 85, of Millboro, Virginia died Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Millboro, VA.

He was born in Philippi, West Virginia, the son of the late James Guy Haddix and Ruby Edith Lake Haddix.

Earl was employed as a devoted educator at Oakfield-Alabama Central School of New York.

He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in the Korean War.

Earl was a member of the NRA and a talented gunsmith.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Dare Arbogast Haddix of Millboro Springs, VA; 2 children: Wesley Bruce Haddix and companion Trina Lamm of Charlottesville, Amanda Loraine Buchanan and companion Jimmy Peery of Weyers Cave; 2 grandchildren: Blaine Haddix and fiancé Carmen White, Kieran Haddix; 1 brother; Guy Haddix and wife Linda of Statesville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Earl was preceded in death by his brother Ralph Haddix and sisters Edith Carman and Barbara Spotlowe.

Per Mr. Haddix’s wishes he was cremated with no service. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philippi, WV.

Carl Cooper Hicks, Jr.

Carl Cooper Hicks, Jr., 72, of 124 Clarkson Lane, Millboro, Virginia died Sunday, August 24, 2014 at residence.

He was born August 25, 1941 in Bridgeton, New Jersey, the son of the late Carl Cooper Hicks, Sr. and Evelyn Emma Fox Hicks.

Carl was employed as a master carpenter by trade.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hicks of Millboro; two children, Carole Ann Zaldivar of Bridgewater, Virginia and Carl Cooper Hicks, III and fiancé Lori of Hot Springs, Virginia; two children by a previous marriage, Linda & Lisa; three grandchildren, Chelsea Anderson, Conner Vandevander and Carinna Zaldivar; two brothers, Robert Hicks of Sewell, New Jersey and Ronald Hicks and wife Addie of Dover, Delaware; and a sister, Sandra Dillon of Bridgeton, New Jersey.

Carl enjoyed carpentry, fishing, reading Stephen King novels, and was an avid Eagles fan.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday August 28, with John B. Young officiating.
